- Atkins - the basic idea of this low carb diet is that limiting carb intake will lead to ketosis which will decrease your hunger and raise metabolism. The entire diet is three phases, the last of which is prolonged maintenance. Generally you can eat whatever meat you want, cheese, eggs, and low carb vegetables. But you have to stay away from alcohol and most carbs, especially breads, pasta, milk, and a lot of fruits and vegetables. It is suggested that dieters take a daily supplement of minerals.
- Protein Power - this diet contends that when low carb foods are eaten in large quantities it increases insulin in the bloodstream which leads to obesity and a whole list of other health problems. How much of what you eat is determined in percentages which can make it more difficult to follow than many of the other low carb diets. Meat, fish,eggs, and cheese should be eaten along with low carb vegetables. The daily intake of fiber should be 25 grams a day and butter,oil,and salad dressing are allowed, so is alcohol in moderation. Water intake should be at least 8 glasses of water every day, while additionally, low carb food supplements are also recommended.
- South Beach - this diet probably takes the most holistic approach of all the low carb diets. It stresses that eating the "right carbs" in combination with the "right fats" leads to a loss of weight as well as an increase in overall health. It too is 3 phases. meat, poultry,fish,eggs and cheese (low-fat) are all allowed as well as healthy oils and nuts, vegetables, "good" carbs and a dessert after the evening meal.
